Prof. Apostolos Papanikolaou
Event & 2026 Conference Chair
Prof. Apostolos Papanikolaou, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), has led 80+ funded research projects and authored/co-authored 700+ scientific publications, earning multiple prestigious international awards. His expertise spans design and holistic optimisation of conventional and unconventional vessels; hydrodynamic analysis of calm-water and seakeeping performance; ship manoeuvrability; logistics-based ship design; intact and damage stability; and maritime safety. He has also contributed to regulatory developments at the IMO (MSC/SLF/MEPC).

Ms. Citores has been Managing Director of Green Marine Europe since February 2025. She leads the strategic and operational development of the European certification in coordination with Green Marine International (GME). She represents the GME programmes institutionally, deploys them across Europe, and supports participants progress.

Rosanne van Houwelingen (MONL)
Ms. Houwelingen is Innovation Project Manager at Maritime & Offshore NL, a Dutch body. She advances circularity and skills in maritime and offshore sectors, strengthening EU shipbuilding through partnerships, innovation management, and clear communication among industry, research, and policy stakeholders.

Takis Varelas (Danaos)
Prof. Varelas majored in chemistry, datametrics, and OR information science. Prof. of AI & MIS in TUC, CTO of Unisystems, CIO at Thenamaris and since 2004 DANAOS Research Director. Participant in 45+ EU projects. Franz Edelman award winner and laureate of homonymous academy.

Policy and regulations for a resilient and sustainable maritime future
Paolo Guglia (BIG)
Mr. Paolo Guglia is Senior Innovation and Policy Manager at Fincantieri. He serves as Vice President of the Blue Italian Growth (BIG) Cluster and, in this role, he drives strategic collaboration across research institutions, industry leaders, and public authorities to advance Italy’s Blue Economy and strengthen the country’s and MED’s maritime innovation ecosystem.

The International Trends Shaping EU Shipyards
Konstantinos Voutzoulidis (ABS)
Mr. Voutzoulidis is the Business Development Director of Europe for Contracted R&D at ABS, leading EU-funded innovation in smart, sustainable shipbuilding. With 15+ years in classification and regulation, he shapes green shipping, decarbonization policy, and digital transformation across European shipyards and stakeholders.

Marc Bonazountas & Apostolos Papanikolaou
Prof. Marc Bonazountas, a Civil Engineer engaged in system engineering. Following 30 years of international academic carrier (Europe, USA), he is now directing the R&I Department of Epsilon International Ltd, Malta, in the sectors of environment, geoinformatics, aviation and maritime. He authored or edited 20+ scientific books, has 500+ publications, and participated and coordinated 100+ European R&I projects.

Dimitrios Lyridis
Prof. Dimitrios Lyridis is Prof. of Maritime Transport at the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), and Head of NTUA’s Laboratory for Maritime Transport (LMT). His research focuses on maritime economics, logistics, shipping finance, and maritime transportation.

Mr Kalis is a Naval architect and project lead; he coordinates WP6 of the CirclesOfLife project. Combining engineering expertise with project management, he structures sustainable maritime initiatives, oversees finances, and engages stakeholders to drive Europe’s maritime sector toward a circular, resilient future.

Mr Florian Carre is Director at ECMAR, Brussesl, and a specialist in EU affairs and funding programmes. With 12+ years managing EU-funded maritime projects (e.g., Horizon Europe), who supports stakeholders to fast-track participation, thus, will summarize the future in R&I and policies.

Evagelos Boulougouris
Prof. Boulougouris is a naval architect and marine engineer with 30 years of industry-focused research in ship safety and design. He heads NAOME, Univ. of Strathclyde, and drives innovation through major UK/EU projects, whist actively shaping international maritime regulations and standards.
